I heard about this film festival last week from the lab and, being a fan of movies, I decided to watch. Haven’t really watched any movies in a proper movie house for the longest time so I thought it would be a good opportunity to immerse my eyes in some French.

Although subtitled, you can still feel whatever emotions they might feel. Language, in all its complex splendor can easily be understood (almost) by the delivery, tone, pace and pretty much everything else. I watched Un Secret and Flandres and enjoyed both of them. Later, I might watch Cabrule even though it has bee Rated R-18.

Un Secret was a bit dragging at first, giving me the impression that it was a psychological film, but all of that changed because of its rich plot and by its clever way story telling. It is the type of film you might want to watch two or three times because of certain little details that only make sense towards the end. Like Easter Eggs in movies. I can only remember one in particular; which was Korea’s My Sassy Girl. All in all, it left an impression at the end and I felt a tug in my heart.

Flandres felt like porn at the start. As soon as I entered the cinema with a friend; there was already some action taking place. It talked a lot about morals and personal discord. It took them to war where you could see the once carefree characters turn into soldiers. They killed and raped and got killed themselves. Save for the first male lead. The female lead seemed like a poor girl who was always being used. She had some psychological disorder which made her kick and scream… but I don’t think it had anything to do with her sexual preferences. I can’t really say that she was a slut though people in the film kept saying she was. It was a quiet film, devoid of any background music. You could hear them breathe all throughout.
